Introductory courses

Einführungskurs Wissenschaftliches Schreiben

(0.7 SWS / 1 CP)

For students at the beginning of their studies, academic writing may seem complex and challenging. This one-day workshop introduces students of all faculties to academic writing at university, helping them avoid common beginners’ mistakes.

Einführungskurs Rechtschreibung und Zeichensetzung

(0,7 SWS / 1 CP)

The best ideas often become meaningless if they are communicated in texts with numerous punctuation or spelling errors. In this one-day introductory course, you will refresh your knowledge of spelling, capitalization, punctuation, and grammar, so that you will be able to apply these basic skills in order to optimize reports, theses, or cover letters.

Einführungskurs Journalismus

(0,7 SWS / 1 CP)

What is journalistic style? What are the components of a news report or news reportage? How does one convey the original “soundtrack”? This one-day course introduces different journalistic text types and is a good preparation for the follow-up semester course "Journalistic Writing".

 

Semester courses and workshops

Wissenschaftliches Schreiben

(2 SWS / 4 CP)

This semester course is designed to equip students of all faculties with strategies to handle all steps in the writing process – from literature research and pre-writing to revision. Using practical exercises, the course will help you adopt a detail-focused approach to writing that will boost your thesis writing skills.

Training Textproduktion

(2 SWS / 4 CP)

In this semester course, you will work on your own and other authors’ texts and creatively explore different text types – essays, application letters, and PR texts – in order to improve your proofreading and editing skills. This training will equip you with useful study and career skills.

Journalistisches Schreiben

(2 SWS / 4 CP)

This practice-oriented semester course trains key skills of journalistic writing and is offered in partnership with the editorial board of the Aachener Zeitung / Aachener Nachrichten. In this course, you will write a news story on a topic of your choice whilst being supported throughout the process – from brainstorming, research, and outlining to the finished news story. Previous attendance of the introductory course “Journalism” or previous writing experience is recommended.

Schreiben für die Öffentlichkeit

(2 SWS / 4 CP)

This practice-oriented semester course conveys key skills required when writing for public relations and is offered in partnership with the marketing and communications department of the city of Aachen. Whilst being supported every step of the way, you will write various PR texts – press releases, newsletters, texts for a homepage, and a flyer – with the aim of developing a campaign on a topic of your choice. Previous writing experience is recommended.
 

Kreatives Schreiben I

(1,3 SWS / 3 CP)

How do you generate ideas? How do you transform ideas into texts? What role does creativity play? This two-day workshop focuses on the "creative" process. You will train various prewriting strategies to boost your creativity and write a selection of short texts, including a portrait, an essay, a scene, a blurb, a character description, a story, and more.

Kreatives Schreiben I (im Museum)

(1,3 SWS / 3 CP)

Held at an exciting venue outside of the university, this three-day workshop at the museum will introduce you to new approaches to writing. It will train strategies to boost your creativity and stimulate you to write innovative texts. Inspired by the diverse artworks on display, you will work on individual and collaborative texts and reflect on your and others’ intense writing experiences, thereby professionalizing writing strategies.

Kreatives Schreiben II

(2 SWS / 4 CP)

This semester course will equip you with the literary tools required to draft, write, and polish stories, essays, scenes, and poems. Previous attendance of the workshops “Creative Writing I” or “Creative Writing I (at the museum)” is recommended.

Texte in Arbeit (Oberseminar)

(2 SWS / 6 CP)

Open on invitation or application only, this multi-semester course trains advanced students who have distinguished themselves in other Writing Center courses. Focusing on your own and other participants’ evolving texts, you will optimize your skills as writers, proofreaders, editors, and peer reviewers.

Freie Rede und Wissenschaftliche Präsentation

(1.3 SWS / 3 CP)

Focusing on the participants’ media-supported presentations, this two-day intensive seminar trains fundamental communication skills required for effective public speaking and academic presentations. Through the assessment of recorded presentations, you will analyze, practice, and optimize presentations, whilst learning relevant strategies for presentation settings.

 

For international students

Schreiben für Internationale

(2 SWS / 4 CP)

Writing skills are essential in all subjects. Writing in German may seem challenging to international students who lack writing experience in a foreign language. In this course, you will discuss different text types and work on your own and other authors’ texts. This training will equip you with writing skills that you can apply during your studies and to your job hunt and career.

Schreibwerkstatt E-Technik

(2 SWS / 3 CP)

These four workshops and the accompanying individual writing consultations will equip prospective engineers with relevant writing, study and career skills. Working with discipline-specific sample texts in a variety of writing and editing exercises, you will train how to cite accurately and how to structure, formulate, and optimize specialist texts. The feedback in the individual writing consultations will help you transfer your new insights to project-related texts and theses.

 

For students of mechanical engineering

Wissenschaftliches Schreiben für angehende Ingenieurinnen und Ingenieure

(2 SWS / 3 CP)

These four workshops and the accompanying individual writing consultations will equip prospective engineers with relevant writing, study, and career skills.
